It has become increasingly more apparent (both from personal observations and scholarly research) that many of our students would benefit from an increase in community-based extracurricular activities. According to a report from Georgetown University, physical activity can be important in the day-to-day life of people with disabilities. The strength and stamina that is developed by participating in physical activity can help maintain a higher level of independence. Increases in physical activity may also affect a person’s ability to go to school, work, and participate in all aspects of community life. Individuals with disabilities who participate in sports have higher self-esteem, better body images and higher rates of academic success; are more confident and more likely to graduate from high school and matriculate in college. Furthermore, sport is where skills like teamwork, goal-setting, the pursuit of excellence in performance and other achievement-oriented behaviors necessary for success in the workplace are developed.

If you, your child, or someone you know is interested in getting out and getting active, I would suggest participating in the All-Star Training Club. All-Star Training Club (ATC) was established to provide an integrated sports program for individuals with or without disabilities where everyone, regardless of ability, is encouraged to participate on the field of athletic competition. ATC is a sanctioned Special Olympics organization and is the only program in a five-county area that offers such a unique approach to athletics where everyone is given the opportunity to become a rising star. In early 2014, All-Star Training Club became the newest member of the United Disability Services (UDS) family. In his new role, ATC Founder Dan Lancianese will continue to work closely with athletes, families and volunteers to promote the benefits of fun and fitness for everyone. United Disability Services is celebrating 65 years of enhancing the lives of people with disabilities by providing opportunities for full participation in the community.
